People:  Recognition - Ron Witkowski  [06/25/08]

People:  Recognition

Some tips about recognition:

  1. It should be used in moderation
    1. Recognition needs to have significance and be earned through efforts.  Recognizing too much detracts from the value of the recognition
    2. Recognizing too little makes the goal "unachievable" in the eyes of your team
  2. Recognition should be personal
    1. Cite a specific example of why they are getting recognized
    2. Do it in front of their peers; that way they feel good
    3. Always grab Liz and/or myself when presenting that way we see their efforts first hand
  3. Understand the psychology
    1. The reason we recognize people is not to give them the $5.00 gift card; in face the card is almost meaningless.
    2. People like to be recognized because of the feeling behind it.  Pride.  Accomplishment.  Worthwhile.
    3. That feeling generates a significant impact and they will, often times subconsciously, work towards receiving that feeling again.
